How to Use Merno
Everything you need to know about tracking achievements, generating review narratives, connecting integrations, and managing your team.
Getting Started
Merno helps you track workplace achievements and turn them into polished, review-ready narratives using AI. Whether you're preparing for a performance review, a 1:1, or just want to remember what you accomplished this quarter — Merno does the heavy lifting.
Create an account with Google OAuth or email/password. If you're joining a team, click the invite link from your email — you'll be added to your organization automatically.
Onboarding
- 1Enter your job title and company. This helps Merno write better narratives about your work.
- 2If you're on the Pro plan, name your first team and invite colleagues via email.
- 3Log your first achievement — write it however feels natural.
- 4See the AI-generated narrative. This is how Merno transforms your raw notes into polished statements.
Logging Achievements
Achievements are the core of Merno. Every time you log a win, Merno generates an AI narrative — a polished, third-person statement you can use in reviews, 1:1s, and self-assessments.
How to log
Click the “What did you accomplish?” bar on your dashboard (desktop) or the + button (mobile). You'll need:
- What happened — describe the achievement in your own words (up to 2,000 characters)
- Category — pick the type of work
- Status — Completed or In Progress
- Date — when it happened (today, yesterday, this week, or a custom date)
10 categories
Choose the category that best fits the work. This helps Merno group achievements in weekly summaries and review narratives.
What the AI does
When you log an achievement, Merno instantly generates a 2-3 sentence narrative in third person. The AI follows strict rules: it never inflates scope, never adds superlatives, and preserves every specific detail you mentioned (names, dollar amounts, dates). The result is something you can confidently share in a review.
Managing achievements
Click on any achievement row to expand it. From there you can:
- Edit — update the text, category, or date (re-generates the AI narrative)
- Favorite — star important wins for quick reference
- Mark Complete — move in-progress work to completed
- Archive — move to the Archived tab
- Delete — soft-delete (can be restored later)
- Toggle Raw/AI — switch between your original text and the AI narrative
Your Dashboard
The dashboard is your daily hub. It shows your achievement timeline, a momentum chart, and any suggested achievements from integrations.
Tabs
- Achievements — completed wins, sorted by date
- In Progress — work you're still tracking
- Suggested — achievement candidates from Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, or the browser extension (approve, edit, or dismiss)
Filtering & search
Use the filter icon to narrow by category or date range. The search bar (right side of the tab bar) searches across both your raw text and AI narratives.
Momentum chart
The 8-week bar chart at the top shows your weekly achievement velocity. Past weeks appear in indigo, the current week in amber. Consistent logging builds your streak — shown next to the chart.
Suggested achievements
When you connect Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, or the browser extension, Merno surfaces potential achievements in the “Suggested” tab. These never auto-log — you always approve, edit, or dismiss them first.
Notifications
Merno keeps you informed with in-app notifications and email alerts. A bell icon in the sidebar (desktop) and bottom navigation (mobile) shows your unread count.
Notification types
- Manager requests — when your manager asks for more details on a specific achievement, you'll see a notification and receive an email
- Suggested achievements — when new candidates arrive from integrations or the browser extension
- Review ready — when review cycle documents have been generated and are ready for you to view
- Platform updates — product news, new features, and important announcements from the Merno team
How it works
Click a notification to navigate directly to the relevant item — for example, a manager's request opens your achievement in edit mode so you can add details immediately. Use “Mark all read” to clear your unread count.
Review Cycles
Review cycles let you schedule automated narrative generation for yourself or your entire team. This is Merno's core value proposition — performance reviews become effortless because the evidence and narratives are already there.
Creating a review cycle
- 1Go to the Reviews page and click "New Cycle."
- 2Name the cycle (e.g. "Q1 2026 Performance Review").
- 3Choose a team (Pro users with teams) or keep it personal.
- 4Set the review period (start and end dates) — this defines which achievements are included.
- 5Set a generation date. Merno auto-generates documents on that date, or you can generate manually anytime.
Team cycles vs. personal cycles
- Team cycles — generates a separate review document for every team member. Great for managers preparing performance reviews across their entire team at once.
- Personal cycles — generates a review document just for you. Perfect for preparing your own self-assessment before the official company review cycle.
How auto-generation works
On the scheduled generation date, Merno automatically generates AI-powered narrative arc documents for every participant in the cycle. Each document includes an executive summary, growth themes with evidence, growth edges, and a forward look — based on that person's achievements during the review period.
Once generated, all participants receive an email notification and an in-app “Review Ready” notification with a link to the Reviews page.
Managing cycle documents
- View — expand any document to see the full narrative arc
- Export PDF — download individual review documents as PDFs
- Mark Reviewed — indicate you've reviewed a document (managers can mark any, participants can mark their own)
- Cycle completion — when all documents in a cycle are marked as reviewed, the cycle automatically moves to “Completed” status
Cycle statuses
- Upcoming — created but documents haven't been generated yet
- Active — documents have been generated and are ready for review
- Completed — all documents have been reviewed
Quick Reviews
Below review cycles on the Reviews page, the Quick Review section lets you generate an ad-hoc growth narrative for any period — no cycle setup needed. Great for one-off self-assessments or preparing for a 1:1.
Generating a narrative
- 1Choose a period: previous month, quarter, last 6 months, or a custom date range.
- 2Click "Generate Narrative." Merno reads all your achievements from that period.
- 3Review the result: an executive summary, key themes with evidence, growth edges, and a forward look.
- 4Download as PDF or keep it for reference. Past narratives are saved under "Previous Narratives."
What the narrative includes
- Executive summary — 1-2 sentences capturing the period
- Themes — 3-5 recurring threads with supporting evidence pulled from your achievements
- Growth edges — areas for development, grounded in what you actually worked on
- Forward look — where the narrative naturally leads next
Analytics
The Analytics page has three tabs: Personal, Team, and Org. Each tab supports date range selection — choose from preset periods (week, month, quarter, 6 months, year) or pick a custom date range with specific start and end dates.
Personal analytics (all users)
- Achievement velocity — line chart showing wins per week over time
- Category trends — area chart showing how different categories evolve week by week
- Category distribution — bar chart showing where your work is concentrated
- Impact metrics — AI-extracted dollar values, client names, and numeric metrics from your achievements
- Streak — current and best consecutive weeks with at least one log
- Period comparison — percentage change vs. the previous period
Team analytics (Pro — managers, owners, admins)
The Team tab shows aggregate data for your team. Managers see their own teams; org owners and admins see all teams via a dropdown selector. It includes:
- Team velocity — line chart of team-wide achievements per week
- Category trends — area chart showing team category evolution
- Member activity — per-person achievement count with category breakdowns
- Team health — deterministic health scores for each member (healthy, needs attention, at risk) based on recent activity patterns, with AI-generated action items
- AI-powered insights — extracted dollar values, client names, numeric metrics, work trends (which categories are up or down), and recurring themes across the team
- Category distribution — team-wide breakdown
Org analytics (owners & admins)
The Org tab provides organization-wide visibility across all teams. It includes:
- Org velocity — total achievements across all teams
- Team comparison — side-by-side achievement counts per team
- Category distribution — org-wide breakdown of where work is happening
Member drill-down
Click any team member in the analytics view to open a detailed side panel with their achievements, category badges, source indicators, and status labels. From the drill-down you can:
- Generate 1:1 prep — AI creates structured talking points (wins, in-progress, discussion topics, suggested questions)
- Request details — ask the team member for more context on a specific achievement (sends a notification and email)
- Custom date range — filter the member's achievements to any period
Integrations
Integrations automatically detect potential achievements from the tools you already use. All require the Pro plan (except the browser extension). Connect them from Settings → Integrations.
Slack
- 1Connect your workspace from Settings → Integrations → "Connect Slack."
- 2Invite the Merno bot to relevant channels: /invite @Merno.
- 3Post wins naturally. Merno detects achievements using 22 keywords (shipped, launched, closed, won, etc.) and 15 positive reactions.
- 4Detected messages appear in the "Suggested" tab on your dashboard for approval.
HubSpot
- 1Connect your HubSpot portal from Settings.
- 2Merno polls every 6 hours for closed-won deals and closed tickets.
- 3Each match is enriched with company, contacts, notes, emails, calls, and meetings.
- 4Review and approve from the Suggested tab.
Salesforce
- 1Connect your Salesforce org from Settings.
- 2Merno polls every 6 hours for closed-won Opportunities and closed Cases.
- 3Matches are enriched with Account name, contacts, amounts, and comments.
- 4Review and approve from the Suggested tab.
Browser Extension
The Merno Chrome extension lets you capture achievements from any webpage. Available on both Free and Pro plans.
Setup
- 1Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store (link in Settings).
- 2Sign in to merno.ai in the same browser. The extension uses your session automatically.
- 3Alternatively, generate an API token in Settings and paste it in the extension’s options.
Three ways to capture
- Text selection — select 10+ characters on any page and click the floating “Save to Merno” button
- Right-click — select text, right-click, choose “Save to Merno”
- Popup — click the extension icon and type directly into the quick capture form
Captures appear in the “Suggested” tab on your dashboard, just like integration candidates.
Team Management
Merno uses a two-layer role system: organization roles control who can manage the org, and team roles control who sees team analytics.
Organization roles
- Owner — created the org, manages billing, full control. One per org.
- Admin — can manage org settings, create/delete teams, invite members, assign roles. Cannot manage billing.
- Member — default role. Logs achievements, participates in teams.
Team roles
- Manager — sees team analytics, generates 1:1 prep, can add/remove team members.
- Member — IC on the team. Their achievements are included in team metrics.
A person can hold different roles across teams (e.g., Manager of Team A, Member of Team B). Org Owners and Admins have implicit access to all teams.
Inviting members
- 1Go to the Team page and click "Invite Members."
- 2Enter up to 10 email addresses.
- 3Review the billing impact (each seat is $20/month).
- 4Invitees receive an email with a 7-day link. When they join, they’re added to the org and granted Pro automatically.
1:1 prep (managers)
From the Analytics page, click any team member to open the drill-down panel. Generate AI-powered 1:1 talking points that include: wins to celebrate, in-progress check-ins, discussion topics, and suggested open-ended questions. You can set a custom date range to focus the prep on a specific period.
Weekly Emails
Merno sends two automated emails. Both respect your timezone and can be toggled off in Settings.
Monday digest (8 AM)
A weekly synthesis of your achievements. It opens with a one-sentence theme for the week, followed by a connecting narrative, grouped achievements by category, and in-progress status updates. If you didn't log anything, you'll get a brief encouragement instead.
Friday reminder (12 PM)
A lightweight nudge to log any wins before the week ends. The messaging adapts to your activity: encouragement if you've been active, a gentle reminder if it's been quiet.
Settings & Billing
Profile
Edit your display name, job title, company, and timezone. These are used to personalize AI narratives and schedule emails at the right time.
Email preferences
Toggle the Monday digest and Friday reminder on or off. You can also send yourself a test digest to preview the format.
Billing (Pro plan)
Merno is free for individual use. The Pro plan ($20/seat/month) unlocks integrations, team management, and team analytics. Billing is at the organization level — the org Owner manages the subscription, and seats auto-scale as members join or leave.
Use the “Manage subscription” link to access Stripe's Customer Portal for invoices, payment method changes, and cancellation.
API tokens
Generate tokens for the browser extension or future API access. Tokens are shown once on creation — copy immediately. You can revoke tokens at any time.
Best Practices
Log often, log small
Don't wait for big wins. Logging 2-3 quick entries per week builds a rich foundation for quarterly narratives. Even “helped debug an issue for a teammate” counts.
Include specifics
Names, dollar amounts, client names, percentages, and tools make achievements credible. “Closed deal” becomes much stronger as “Closed $45K deal with Acme Corp after 3-month negotiation.”
Use In Progress for ongoing work
Track multi-week efforts as In Progress. When they complete, mark them done with the full outcome. This gives the AI better context for narratives.
Review your Monday digest
The weekly email surfaces patterns you might miss day-to-day. If the theme doesn't feel right, it's a signal to log more context with your achievements.
Generate narratives quarterly
Don't wait until review season. Generating a quarterly narrative while the work is fresh catches nuances that you'd forget six months later. Keep them saved — they stack up into a career history.
Set up review cycles in advance
Create review cycles at the start of each quarter with the generation date set to the end. Merno auto-generates documents on that date — so by the time review season hits, everything is already written. For team cycles, every member gets their own AI-generated narrative without any manual effort.
For managers: check team analytics weekly
The AI-powered insights surface trends, dollar figures, and recurring themes across your team. Use them to prepare for 1:1s, celebrate wins in team meetings, and spot gaps in team coverage. Click any team member to drill into their recent achievements.
For managers: request details when needed
When reviewing a team member's achievement, use the “Request Details” button to ask for more context. They'll receive a notification and email with a direct link to edit that specific achievement.
